Tarta Relena + Meara O’Reilly’s Hockets for Two Voices performed by Mingjia Chen & Linnea Sablosky
The Iron Horse — Northampton, MA
DOORS 6PM SHOW 7PM
OTHERWORDLY VOCAL POLYPHONY FROM CATALUNYA
Founded by Helena Ros Redon and Marta Torrella i Martínez, Tarta Relena explores the rich vocal traditions of the Mediterranean, singing in languages such as Classical Greek, Italian, Spanish, Latin, Catalan, Ladino, and more. Their music blends sacred and secular influences, drawing inspiration from flamenco, lyrical song, traditional music, and electronic experimentation.
The duo escapes easy categorization (they once dubbed their music as “progressive Gregorian”). But the general aesthetic can be outlined as minimalist, precise, emotionally raw, and both arcane and at once relatable. They have garnered rave reviews on international stages (Big Ears, Sónar, Le Guess Who) for their telepathic and deeply engaging stage performances.

MEARA O’REILLY’s HOCKEtS FOR Two VOICes
We are so very fortunate to have two LA-based vocalists, Mingjia Chen & Linnea Sablosky, opening the show on this tour with Tarta Relena. They will be performing Meara O’Reilly’s “Hockets for Two Voices”, her critically acclaimed 2019 debut album.
Hocketing is the practice of splitting a melody across multiple parts. Sonic Youth’s Lee Ronaldo once reviewed the composition, saying it “sends you, moves you, destroys you with beauty“. Meara O’Reilly is a composer and artist focusing on perception and new musical interfaces.
mingjia sings, composes, improvises, writes songs, writes words, curates shows & events, draws, is usually in los angeles or toronto, was born in beijing, makes original music, leads the chamber ensemble tortoise orchestra, is 1 half of the band uoou, and belts & yodels with roomful of teeth.
Linnea Sablosky is an LA-based musician with a passion for close harmony and intricate rhythms. Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area, they grew up studying Balkan singing and West African drumming. Linnea has toured internationally with world folk choir Northern Harmony, and released records with vocal ensembles Stone Fruit Trio and Wheeler & Sablosky. Their current project is Kidi Band, which released its sophomore record in March 2021.
