ROMPERAYO

Thursday, August 21
ROMPERAYO + DJ SHAKI
at the Drake in Amherst

modern TROPICAL SOUNDS from bogota

Romperayo, finally in the US for the first time, is here to make some ruckus with their subversive, irreverent take on tropical Colombian music. They take a myriad of Afro-latin folk influences into a musical test kitchen — adding electronic samples, synth effects, experimental touches, and their unique sense of humor — and emerge with a modern cumbia sound that can still be traced back to their collection of Latin American and African vinyl from the 60s and 70s.

The band is a musical vanguard composed of drummer and bandleader Pedrito Ojeda (Frente Cumbiero, Los Pirañas), Nicolas Eckardt on bass (La Sonora Mazuren), and Ivan Medellin (Conjunto Media Luna) on accordion. If you’re a fan of Meridian Brothers, this show is essential for you. Romperayo will play their very first US performance in Amherst at the tail end of the Summer, launching Secret Planet into its third season.

DJ Shaki is Rick Omonte from New Haven, Connecticut. Perhaps best known for his role as bass player in the psychedelic groups Mountain Movers and Headroom, he also released the compilation album “Puro Tayta Shanti”. An extensive deep dive into old Peruvian folk music, it was compiled, researched, and licensed solely by Shaki. Every month you can catch him on-air at WPKN 89.5fm, broadcasting global grooves from Bridgeport, CT and reaching the far corners of this world.

This is for Secret Planet members only! — if you’d like to buy a regular ticket, scroll up…
