south african jazz from the joburg/uk underground

Tradition-trouncing trans-Atlantic Afro-centric futuristically ancient fusion. That description comes straight from the band, though there is a broader ambivalence to categorizing the music at all. The Brother Moves On is a South African performance art ensemble from Johannesburg, and their inspiration draws primarily from the tradition of live protest music, the mission of securing a truly anti-apartheid country, and the search for a space where the joy of the music becomes synonymous with its people, space and consciousness .

Led by Siyabango Mthembu (lead singer of Shabaka & the Ancestors), their latest album just released on Shabaka Hutching’s label Native Rebel Recordings is titled: “$/He Who Feeds You…Owns You”. It refers to a speech by the pan-African revolutionary Thomas Sankara regarding food sovereignty and land. “Whoever feeds you… whoever owns your food system runs you,” explains Mthembu.

The band’s sound is rooted in South African jazz but takes flight in lots of different directions: hip-hop, spoken word, church song, Xhosa funk, and systems of indigenous sound. It’s masterful resistance music that both heals and challenges in equal measure.

PARLOR ROOM SESSION in NOHO

After a great set with EL KHAT this past November, we’re thrilled to be back in this incredibly intimate room for the South African jazz vibes. Some will want to sit and some will want to dance, so we’ll have the room set up hybrid style for even amounts of both. The Parlor Room is BYOB, so bring your favorite bev.
